Initiatives

Under the leadership of Headmaster, George Chisala and his staff, the school teaches the students more than what is taught in the classroom.  Mr. Chisala has a goal to make the school more sustainable, and in the last few years, has worked towards that goal along with his students:
  • Planting crops of maize, vegetables and bananas that are tended to by the children
  • Raising chickens for eggs as well as raising broilers for sale to the local hospital
  • Currently raising 2 pigs for eventual food for the school. Plans are to extend the piggery and purchase more pigs when funds are available
  • The school's choir recorded a CD in October 2012 to raise funds. If you are interested in purchasing one, please see our How You Can Help page.

Vegetables are planted based on the season and availability of money for seeds
Maize is grown during the rainy season and once harvested is ground to provide meal for the student's porridge
The school demonstrated the best agricultural practices in the 2006/2007 farming season when they competed against 50 public schools in Ndola.
The size of the banana grove is limited by the lack of water

The layers currently provide approximately 40 eggs a day which allows the children to have 2 eggs a week
Until the numbers of broilers increases, they are raised, butchered and sold locally to make money for the school.  The goal is to increase the numbers of broilers so they can be raised to provide a sustainable source of food for the school.
The piggery currently has 2 pigs that are housed in a cement building.  The goal is to increase the number of pigs in a newly constructed piggery which will provide a healthier environment for the pigs to be raised.

Future site of the piggery estimated to cost $2,100 U.S..  Plans are on hold until funding is obtained.
